MANY socialists disagree with the policy of this country selling arms abroad and particularly where torture and suppression are practised by the Government.
This week the largest sale of arms in Europe is being held in London's dockland. On the night of September 11 a gala dinner is being held at which Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon is the guest speaker.
I find it curious that a minister in a socialist government should give an address at a sale of arms. Will he insist that none of the arms should go to governments that practice torture, nor to countries where poverty is rife?
Could York's MP Hugh Bayley explain to us how it is justifiable for a socialist government to sell arms to other countries? Or is the truth that New Labour is not a socialist party?
