A NIGHT out in Selby cost teenager Shaun Smith £205 after he ended up in court charged with a breach of the peace.

Smith, 18, had visited two pubs and Jems nightclub when he was spotted brawling with another man near the taxi rank, in James Street, Selby, in the early hours of last Friday.

The court heard that police saw the defendant and another youth punching each other about the head.

Smith, a bricklayer, of Chapel Walk, Riccall, remained in the taxi queue and the other youth crossed the road.

But within minutes, they were again hitting each other round the head.

Jane Pattison, for Smith, said a youth, who was part of a group of males, walked up to the defendant and said he did not like the way he looked and hit him in the face with his fist.

The pair grappled and wrestled and Smith then left the matter, only for the brawl to erupt again shortly afterwards.

Miss Pattison said both men were in drink, but her client was not necessarily the aggressor.

Smith, who admitted using threatening behaviour, was fined £150, with £55 court costs.

Magistrates were told the other teenager involved in the fight would be dealt with in the youth court.
