HARD-WORKING volunteers have given more than 2,000 hours of help to the community - and have achieved awards of excellence for their dedication to the cause.

Eleven young people have been recognised for their voluntary work, each notching up 200 hours at projects across Ryedale.

Jane Hellowell, Ryedale's Millennium Volunteer co-ordinator, said she was thrilled with their efforts.

"All of these young people are actually continuing with their volunteering placements, showing real commitment to their local community," she said.

"We are holding a celebration event next month to celebrate the achievements of the MVs who have achieved awards so far.

"But we also would like to thank all the volunteering placements across Ryedale who are providing the opportunities for young people to take part in such a wide range of activities."

The 11-strong dream team included Hannah Goddard, Andrew Hill, Mark Hammond, Emma Clark, Michelle Ford, Philip Bell, Rachael Scatcherd, Philip Richardson, Michael Brown, Samantha Nugent and Heather Ponton-Brown.

They worked for a variety of causes, including the Encephalitis Society, Help The Aged Charity Shops in Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley, Ryedale Special Families Youth Club, Pickering Musical Society and Malton and Rillington Scout groups.
