A TEACHER from York has won the chance go to the Kalahari Desert to carry out research into meerkats.
Caroline Banckley-Sharp, from Lower Ebor Street, will head out to South Africa on Saturday to take part in the project run by Earthwatch.
She will be staying in the Kuruman River Reserve, where she will monitor the weights of meerkats and collect samples to see how co-operative breeding affects the survival of meerkat kittens.
Caroline, who teaches science at Beaumont Hill School, in Darlington, was one of 20 teachers across the country to be given opportunity after applying to Earthwatch.
She said: "I cannot believe I have the opportunity to go and see such a fantastic place."
Caroline will spend two-and-a- half weeks in South Africa and will speak to students about her experiences on her return.
