FARM workers have been warned to secure their machinery after a spate of thefts from rural businesses on the outskirts of York.
Police are hunting the owners of a silver Vauxhall Astra, registration H870 DBK, that was seen to drive up farm tracks in Acaster Malbis and Elvington. Two quad bikes, one of which was worth £1,800, and a sheep trailer, were stolen from two separate farms on Monday.
The silver car, driven by a fair-haired youth, was seen at both farms and at a third in the Acaster Malbis area, where two chainsaws were also stolen. Sergeant Colin Ventress, of York Police, said he believed the same people were responsible for all the thefts.
He said: "Farmers should ensure that they secure high-value items of machinery at all times because rural businesses are very vulnerable to this type of crime." Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to phone 01904 631321.
