FIVE buildings have been selected to receive a major makeover in an effort to clean up an East Yorkshire town.
Last month the Evening Press reported that East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the Weighton Area Regeneration Partnership had received funding for a massive three-year scheme to improve Market Weighton.
The £240,000 project, known as the Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme, will include the refurbishment and restoration of historic buildings in the town centre.
The first five buildings to be transformed under the initiative have now been identified. Four of the buildings, which all date from the 18th and 19th century, are in Market Place, while the other is in High Street.
They are: Birch's Electrical Services in High Street; 72 Market Place, formerly Loft's Electrical and TV shop, which has been empty for several years; 78 Market Place, formerly the Tack Shop, a business which closed some years ago; and 47-49 Market Place, formerly Weighton Weighs, which closed last year and Turnbulls in Market Place.
The aim of the work is to bring the town's historic buildings back into use while maintaining Market Weighton's distinctive character and heritage.
