THE Venerable Martin Wallace, Archdeacon of Colchester, was unveiled today as the new Bishop of Selby.
Archdeacon Wallace, a 54-year-old father of two, was introduced at St William's College by the Archbishop of York, Dr David Hope.
His appointment was announced by downing street at 11am today. He said it was "a real privilege" to be appointed bishop.
He said he and his wife, Diana, had visited York for a holiday some years ago and said then they would like to come back for a longer stay.
"Little did I realise God was listening so carefully," he said.
Archdeacon Wallace praised the work done in Selby by his predecessor, Bishop Humphrey Taylor, to help the community prepare for the closure of the Selby coalfields.
He said: "My hope would be that the Church throughout would be part of all the discussions to help people and their individual lives into the future and help the community face a different future."
