THIEVES stole bank and credit cards from shop staff across North Yorkshire - then phoned their victims to find out their PIN numbers.
In at least three incidents in Selby, Thornton-le-Dale and Malton over the past week shop staff discovered that their bags or purses had been stolen from their workplace.
Some time later they each received a phone call from someone pretending to be a police officer or staff member from their bank asking what their PIN number was.
According to a North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman none of the victims gave those details to the caller, although in similar cases other victims have given the number to the caller.
It is not known whether cash was subsequently withdrawn from those accounts.
Now police officers are issuing a warning to the public never to reveal their personal PIN number, and are urging anyone else who falls victim to this kind of scam to phone them immediately on 01609 783131.
