Visitors have dug deep in the North York Moors to mark national archaeology day.
The national park, which is believed to have more scheduled ancient monuments than any other park in the country, opened Cawthorn Roman camps, near Pickering, last weekend. Roman games were played and costumes from Roman times were on display as part of the special event. Visitors learned how digital surveying equipment helped experts learn more about the Roman camps complex.
Graham Lee, national park archaeologist, said: "This amazing and unique archaeological site is where Roman legionnaires practised building forts and other defences and there are also signs of other historic occupants of the site."
