ONE woman died and five people were taken to hospital after a two-car smash on an East Yorkshire Road.
The woman, who has not yet been named, died following the crash on the A1079, near Market Weighton, at 12.40pm yesterday.
A young girl suffered serious head and leg injuries and was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary in the Humberside Police helicopter.
A young boy suffered serious head injuries and was also taken to Hull Royal Infirmary along with three other men, one with head injuries, another with chest injuries and a third suffering from shock.
The accident happened when a silver Ford Mondeo, travelling towards Market Weighton and towing a caravan, was in collision with a red Vauxhall Corsa.
Firefighters from Market Weighton attended the scene along with four ambulances.
At the scene, Insp Howard Brown, from Humberside Police, said: "We are investigating why the Mondeo has come into the path of the Corsa.
"I am keen to find out why it has happened. We have spoken to some witnesses that I believe were people in the lay-by."
Insp Brown said there was no apparent reason for what had happened, but police were keen to speak to any other witnesses who may have seen the two vehicles.
