YORK'S younger residents are invited to give their views on whether the age to stand for council or Parliament should be lowered.
Rules state that electoral candidates must be aged 21, but the Electoral Commission is seeking widespread views on whether it should be changed.
The commission wants to involve young people who would not normally be interested in voting and politics in its consultation exercise.
It will be carrying out a survey, speaking directly to relevant groups and looking for responses at a variety of events including the annual sitting of the UK Youth Parliament and the autumn party conferences.
The full consultation paper, entitled, How Old Is Old Enough? and a young people's version of the document, called 16-18-21?, are available on the commission's website: www.electoralcommission.org.uk
Responses to the issues outlined should be received by Friday 31 October 2003.
