THE widow of a former Ryedale councillor known as "Mr Sheriff Hutton" has thanked everyone who attended or helped with her husband's memorial service.

Jean Farnaby, of Sheriff Hutton, said the service, to celebrate the life of her husband Alan, was "wonderful".

It saw 340 people pack into St Helen and the Holy Cross Church, at Sheriff Hutton.

Mrs Farnaby said: "There was a great atmosphere, a real feeling of togetherness, it was a genuine celebration of Alan's life and people were saying they had never been to a service quite like it.

"My son, Richard, and I would like to thank everyone who has helped or supported us in any way."

Coun Farnaby died in late June, aged 69, after a short illness. He had served on Ryedale District Council since 1991 and was clerk to Sheriff Hutton Parish Council for almost 48 years.
