TWO second places for York driver James Thompson reinforced his bid to claim the British Touring Car championship.
Thompson was pipped to first place in both races at Croft, near Darlington, yesterday. But his consistent performances behind the wheel of his Vauxhall Astra coupe enabled him to keep up the pressure.
The first race was won by Matt Neal, in a Honda, ahead of Thompson, who was just fended off by Neal as the York ace pressed for the chequered flag.
However, there was misery for Thompson's Vauxhall team-mate and championship leader Yvan Muller. He crashed out of contention at the first bend.
First-race victor Neal also led going into the the first corner of the second race, but with success ballast on board it was evident he was not going to hold on to pole position.
The eventual triumph went to Anthony Reid, who piloted his MG ZS machine ahead of the Vauxhalls driven by Thompson and Muller.
But Thompson's brace ensured he stayed on the pace for the championship laurel.
