A MAN who was talked out of jumping off a York bridge on Thursday returned to the scene of the incident and jumped off on Saturday evening, police said today.

The man survived his fall, but suffered serious injuries.

He was taken to York Hospital for treatment.

Traffic in the city was brought to a standstill for a second time on Saturday as the man stood on the edge of the bridge across the A64 threatening to jump. The road was closed for about an hour, causing traffic to back up on the A64.

This combined with York races traffic to cause long tailbacks throughout the city on Saturday evening.

Police were alerted to the incident in the Fulford area at 5.46pm when the man was standing on the bridge threatening to jump off.

Police immediately closed the road to traffic in both directions, while officers tried to calm the man and talk him down from the bridge.

But after negotiating with the man for a period he was seen to lower himself and drop off the side of the bridge on to the road beneath.
