North Yorkshire hopes of bagging a big contingent in this week's Open championship at Sandwich were strengthened after the first round of qualifying.
Malton and Norton's Simon Dyson hit a three-under-par 68 at the North Foreland course, a score matched by Bridlington Links' player Chris Smith at Littlestone. Over at the Royal Cinque Ports course, Ganton's Gary Brown posted 73 while Nick Ludwell of Selby was one shot further back. Today all four were competing in the second qualifying round.
