T R Johnson is right to suggest York residents should expect the highest standards of cleanliness for York's streets (Letters, July 7).
However, if he believes all improvements can be attributed to Coun Galloway's much-trumpeted York Pride campaign, he is mistaken.
The council's street environment initiative is gearing up to raise standards, having been planned, set up and budgeted for by the previous Labour council.
Already we are seeing improvements from the new cleaning squad and the extra resources for residential areas, and there will be more to come.
The service, including half a dozen area-based staff and a special hotline to handle all street environment requests and complaints, is on track to be officially launched in the autumn.
Labour will be watching to ensure the Liberal Democrats deliver the prompt and effective service that Labour set out to achieve.
We should all be able to take pride in our city, but Coun Galloway should not seek to pride himself on other people's planning and hard work.
Coun Derek Smallwood,
Labour spokesperson for Environment and Sustainability,
Wycliffe Avenue,
York.
