A CHURCH near Selby is about to take a giant leap into the 21st century so that clergy no longer have to strain their vocal chords.
St Mary's Church, at Hemingbrough, is having new sound and hearing loop systems installed at a cost of £7,000.
Churchwarden Peter Bramley said: "For generations, successive vicars have strained their vocal chords to make themselves heard in this ancient, massive church.
"But from Sunday, August 3, everybody will be able to hear perfectly, which will be particularly beneficial at the larger services, concerts and other events. I'm sure this new system will be appreciated by the whole community."
The parochial church council has launched an appeal to pay for the work.
A gift day will be held at the church on Friday, July 25, between 6pm and 9pm.
For those unable to attend, donations can be made directly to the church treasurer, Brian Hopper, or to the churchwardens, Mr Bramley and Carol Perry.
