MERCEDES-BENZ has unveiled details of the latest model in its C-Class range - the new C200 CDI diesel. It arrives in the showrooms next month in saloon, estate and sports coup forms, and is likely to prove popular in the fleet market.

The new model supplements the C220 CDI and C270 CDI models, which remain in the line-up. This family of diesel engines, using advanced economical and clean common rail technology, offers power and torque.

Prices for the C200 CDI range have been set at £1,000 less than the equivalent C220 CDI models, with the same equipment, model and specification levels. Entry prices for the range are: £20,660 for the C200 CDI sports coup; £21,555 for the C200 CDI Classic saloon; and £22,505 for the C200 CDI Classic estate.

Technically, the C200 CDI shares the same basic engine as its C220 CDI stablemate. The four-cylinder unit retains its capacity of 2148cc, but peak power output is now 122bhp at 4200rpm. Maximum torque of 270Nm is available between 1400 and 2800rpm (the equivalent C220 CDI models are 143bhp and 340Nm respectively).

Fuel consumption for saloon models with the standard six-speed manual transmission is 47.9mpg. Carbon dioxide emissions are 156g/km, meaning the car falls into the 18 per cent tax bracket (this includes the three per cent loading for diesel cars).

Business users will appreciate another low figure from the C200 CDI Classic saloon - its annual company car benefit in kind taxation is £3,852 - an attractive figure in the competitive executive car business market.
