A COMMUNITY-LED company could be set up to deal with York's piles of plastic bottles.
Simon Brereton from Community Regeneration York (CRY) spoke to City of York Council environment chiefs about the proposals.
He told last night's meeting about a Sheffield-based company that sorts plastic collected for recycling to get maximum value from its sale.
This company has created 45 jobs for people who have had problems finding employment due to learning difficulties or mental health problems.
Andrew Waller, the council's executive member for environment, said: "At the moment we are not getting any money for the plastic collected at the Foss Islands depot. Here we have an opportunity to provide a solution to this problem, and make a real difference by combining efforts that City of York Social Services and CRY are making to bring employment to people who have difficulties."
Current plastic collections from just 900 York homes yield seven tons a year. The plans will be discussed further later in the year.
