ALMOST 2,000 students were receiving degrees and diplomas from the University of York this week as the university celebrates its 40th anniversary.

Another 900 postgraduate students were also receiving their awards, while people with distinguished careers - ranging from film-making to molecular biology - were being awarded honorary degrees.

These include Peter Lord, founder of Aardman Animations, which made Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run, and other award-winning animations.

Another honorary graduate is Dr Victor Bolotov, first vice-minister for the Russian Ministry of Education who is a moderniser of the Russian education system and has established links with the University of York.

The degrees were being presented at the university's Central Hall today, tomorrow and on Friday.

The ceremonies are being shown live on large screens in the Campus Exhibition Centre, where images of the university over the past 40 years were also on display.

Full details of today's ceremonies, including listings of all graduates, can be found within our education channel.
