YORK City Knights chairman Roger Dixon has joined the queue of people lauding the support received by the club in their first season.
Dixon, himself a dedicated York RL fan of many years' standing, has been overwhelmed by the backing the new club has received from the growing army of supporters.
The latest example of the ever-improving following generated by the Knights came at Chorley on Sunday, when up to 200 fans made the journey over the Pennines to almost double the gate at Victory Park. The team lost for the first time in five games but the fans' backing never abated.
"The way they applauded the players off the pitch was incredible," said Dixon.
"We seem to be having as many fans going to away matches as the old York Wasps got at home matches in their bad times.
"It's marvellous and I really want to thank them and say that it is appreciated.
"There is considerable expense for people to get to away games especially and I think it is wonderful that they are behind us like that."
He added: "For the players and everyone associated with the club, it makes you feel as though you are doing something people want and are involved in something that people cherish.
"You see the blue and white everywhere and it makes the effort worthwhile.
"You feel as though you're part of a large family and of a great community, and that the club is something that people are taking to their hearts."
The Knights' next game is against National League Two leaders Keighley at Huntington Stadium a week on Sunday. It will be their first home match for six weeks and, while the Cougars are expected to bring a lot of support, the Knights are hoping for another big turn-out of York fans.
"It's marvellous the way they're getting behind us and I hope they will turn out in great numbers to roar on the team at the Keighley game," said Dixon.
He added: "I know several players have already said this, but the roar that has been greeting them as they go out onto the pitch makes a big difference to them. It makes a difference in the better times and in the not so good times.
"We cannot take the support for granted and we cannot over-congratulate the supporters for it."
