SPORTING choristers from the Minster School have found regional success on the football pitch.

The team battled it out against other Cathedral schools in the North of England to win the Northern Choir Schools 'Association five-a-side Football Tournament in Liverpool.

The York team was the only school squad to be coached by a female member of staff, in the June 10 tournament.

Football coach Joanne Lister, said: "The boys played some well-fought matches and their enthusiasm and team spirit enabled them to gain some well earned honours."

After their triumph, the competitors were taken on a sightseeing tour of Liverpool.

TENNIS

QUEEN Margaret's School, Escrick, have proved they are the queens of the court after they secured a hat-trick of county tennis titles.

Having already won the Under-14s tournament in Thirsk through Nicola Wilson and Claire Forsythe, the school have added both the Under-15s and Under-13s categories to their collection.

Sarah Batty and Georgina Bracewell took the U15s section, while Alex Heriot Hartland and Sarah Proctor triumphed in the U13s.

Heslington Primary School came close to glory in the Yorkshire finals of the Inter-Primary Schools Tennis Challenge at South Leeds tennis Centre.

They finished runners-up in the Girls Year Six and Under green event played with soft normal-sized balls on full courts.

The winners were East Yorkshire school South Cave, who beat Heslington, Moorfield and Sheffield High School for Girls in the round-robin competition.

Heslington were represented by Amy MacKersie, Jodie Ridsdale, Faye Garland and he younger sister, Emily.

South Cave also won the Year 6 and Under boys' competition in which the Poppleton quartet of George Chambers, Tom Keighley, Tom Richardson and Tom Kite were third.

Tockwith, represented by Georgina Gray, Matthew East, Chris Fairhurst and Ben Terry were runners-up to Rothwell St Mary's 'A' in the Year 5 and below event.

Tockwith's section contained 12 teams in the 'red' event in which was played on smaller courts using larger, soft balls.

St Olave's are the winners of the British Schools' Team Tennis U-13 Boys League.

Queen Margaret's have to win their last match against Pocklington to win the U15 Girls' League.

Pocklington have won the U15 Boys League but Bootham and St Olave's have to play a deciding set in the U13 Girls' League.

The presentation of trophies will take place at Dunnington Tennis Club at 4.30pm on Friday.

CRICKET

Bishopthorpe stormed it through to the final of the Primary Schools' Cricket Cup competition.

They hammered Robert Wilkinson, Strensall, by 125 runs to book their place in the final which will be played at Heworth CC on Wednesday, July 9 (4pm start).

Nathan Jacobs-Thompson and David Fisher put on 29 forBishopthorpe's first wicket, while Smith and Kelly added 23 for the fourth wicket. Bowlers Reeves took 2-11 and Jacobs-Thompson 1-15.

The second semi-final will be between Hempland and Appleton Roebuck or Copmanthorpe.

The day after the Primary Cup final, the final league matches of the season will be played. They are:

Under 13 League

Group A: Sherburn v Millthorpe, Joseph Rowntree v Barlby, Minster v Bootham, Tadcaster v Manor.

Group B: Lowfield v All Saints, Huntington v Oaklands, Archbishop's have a free week.

Under 15 League

Group A: Manor v Tadcaster, Barlby v Joseph Rowntree, Millthorpe v Sherburn, Bootham have a free week.

Group B: Burnholme v All Saints, Oaklands v Huntington, Archbishop's and Fulford both have a free week.

The semi-finals of the Under-12 competition are scheduled for Monday, July 14. The U-14 Cup semis will take place two days later.

The U-13 league final will be on Tuesday, July 15 (U13), and the U-15 final two days later.
