POLICE are cracking down on drink-drivers this summer.
Humberside Police have launched a county-wide campaign to reduce road collisions and casualties. National figures have revealed nearly one in seven of all road deaths involve drivers over the legal alcohol limit and more drink-drive offences are committed in July and August than any other time of year.
Sergeant Neil Fillingham, the force roads policing co-ordinator, said: "At this time of year, people eat and drink outdoors on a regular basis with barbecues, picnics and impromptu visits to the pub on a hot day being a common activity. Often alcohol will be consumed at these events in such quantities that it leaves motorists over the limit.
"During July we will be targeting our efforts at clamping down on drink-drivers and all uniformed officers will be involved in carrying out breath tests where required and distributing drink-drive related leaflets to motorists."
Inspector Dick Cockerline, of C Division, which includes Pocklington and the surrounding area, said police officers would be making sure that everyone who was involved in a collision was breath tested.
He said they would be targeting specific places in the area, such as public houses where people are known to drink-drive, and individuals who have been known to drink-drive in the past.
He urged members of the public to contact the police if anyone they knew drove while over the limit.
"We will make every effort to follow up information from members of the public. People need to wise up about drink-driving. It is not acceptable."
North Yorkshire Police said that while they were not holding a specific campaign this summer, they would still be tough on drink-drivers.
