A YORK swimming pool has been shut down after bolts from its roof were found in the water.

City of York Council says Yearsley Pool will be shut for at least a week following the discovery yesterday morning.

A council spokeswoman said the bolts were found at the bottom of the pool, having fallen in during the previous night.

She said: "We have decided to do a full investigation, which will mean draining the pool. That will take at least three days.

"We will also be putting up scaffolding as we check the roof, and deciding what action to take."

She said they had noticed other bolts in the roof were also loose.

"Obviously, we are constantly monitoring our buildings, as part of our regular checks. Nobody was injured."

Fiona Evans, co-ordinator of the Yearsley Pool Action Group - formed to campaign against closure of the city's pools - said she was not surprised that there were problems, although she was disappointed at the closure.

She said: "I swim there every morning, sometimes twice a day, and obviously we'll all be disappointed, but it's a safety issue and it needs to be addressed.

The council spokeswoman said it would be at least a week before the pool could be reopened.
