CONCERNED parents have called for the speed limit outside an East Yorkshire school to be cut to 20mph for their children's safety.
Residents of Fangfoss voted unanimously for the 40mph speed limit outside the entrance of St Martin's CofE Primary School to be reduced to 20mph in a public meeting. Villagers also called for additional traffic calming measures on the stretch of road, which many children have to cross to reach the primary school.
About 80 people attended the meeting, which was organised by Fang-FUSS (Fangfoss Upgrades School Safety), due to fears that children could be injured or even killed by traffic outside the school.
Fang-FUSS spokesman Richard Claxton said three-quarters of the 70 children who attend the school had to cross a road with a 40mph limit and a blind bend.
He said: "The school is on a very dangerous bend. "There is no crossing and no crossing patrol."
He said residents wanted East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Humberside Police to follow the example of York, where many schools already have 20mph speed restrictions outside their entrance.
The meeting was also attended by representatives from Humberside Police and East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and Councillors David Rudd and David Nolan.
Paul Copeland, of the council's highways division, said all East Yorkshire schools were being assessed to see if there was a need for increased safety measures.
Residents at the meeting also voted unanimously for the 40mph speed limit on the road which runs through Fangfoss, Bolton and Spittal, to be reduced to 30mph.
