TEENAGER Philip Dobson played a starring role in York's match against Harrogate in the Yorkshire Inter-Union clash at his home course at the Oaks.

The 16-year-old was drafted in as a late replacement for his second Union appearance and had a resounding 6 and 5 singles victory over Bedale's Roger Parry.

That came after young Dobson teamed up with Scarthingwell's Sean Ramsdale in the foursomes to finish all square with Parry and Carl Simpkin (Ripon City).

York University maths student James Mason (Fulford) also got his sums right with a 6 and 4 victory over Tim Moorhouse (Harrogate) after partnering James Duckett (Fulford) to victory by the same score against Moorehouse and Daniel Dunn (Pannal).

York led 7-5 after the foursomes, but Harrogate had the edge in the singles, 14-10, to overhaul the home team and win 19-17.

Dobson, Mason, Dunn and Ramsdale were York's only singles winners.

FORMER Heworth professional Neil Cheetham saw the Yorkshire PGA title slip through his hands at Willow Valley.

Cheetham, a European Tour member, saw his overnight lead evaporate and carded 71 77 to finish joint second, three shots behind Aran Wainwright (Wakefield).

Ganton's Gary Brown had a two-round total of 149, Andrew Turner (Knaresborough) 150, Steve Robinson (Malton and Norton) 152, Nick Ludwell (Selby) 156 and Ian Tailby (Pike Hills) 168.

KEVIN and Angela Maguire won Fulford's Conner Cup annual mixed foursomes, finishing on 68.5, one shot ahead of Tony and Jean Hinder.

Ernie Docwra, a leading tennis player for several years in York, took first prize in Fulford's midweek medal with an eight under par 64.

Fulford will stage the Yorkshire PGA Masters over 36 holes of strokeplay on Wednesday, July 30, with a pro-am the following day. Malton and Norton is the venue for the Yorkshire PGA Classic three-man team event on Tuesday, September 23.

GORDON Kelly won Allerthorpe Park's President's Cup stableford with 42 points, edging home from Keith Wall, who was a point behind.

Meanwhile, there was a close finish to the midweek medal where Paul Eade just got the better of Iain Angus on a countback after both had nett 59s.

TEN former winners peg up in the £18,000 De Vere Hotels City of Leeds Cup that swings into action at Oulton Park next week.

They include Graeme Bell, the Eaglescliffe professional, who did not drop a shot in all three rounds on his way to victory last year.

Among those bidding for Leeds Cup glory are Gary Vickers (Knaresborough), Richard Wood (Romanby), Gary Brown (Ganton), Steve Robinson (Malton and Norton), Ian Tailby (Pike Hills), Nick Ludwell (Selby), Dave Padgett (Pannal), Mark Winterburn (Forest Park), Andrew Turner (Knaresborough) and Marcus Maith (Selby).

DAVE Padgett had a top 20 finish in the Manx Classic at Castletown, Isle of Man.

The Pannal man recovered from a poor opening round of 80 to card 71 72 for a three round total of 223 to finish joint 19th.

Osmkirk-based David Shacklady (Mossock Hall) won the event with 208.

Knaresborough's Gary Vickers totalled 225 and club colleague Andrew Turner 234.

OLIVIA Ellerinton and Anne Barett won Ladies Invitionan Day at Kilnwick Percy hosted by lady captain Linda Johnson.

They clocked up 38 points in the better ball stableford competition.

Kilnwick Percy's Scratch League team were back to form with a 3-1 victory over Flamborough with team member Rob Bradley maintaining his form to win the next club stableford competiton with 40 points, thus reducing his handicap to five.

SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD Danny Newton won Forest of Galtres GC's June monthly medal on countback from Mick King and Wayne Pagdin after all three players carded nett 64s.

RICHARD Cass won Fulford's Captain's Day division one prize with 41 stableford points on countback, but Robert Jones took captain Jonathan Plaxton's top prize with 47 points in division three.

The day raised £463.10 for Martin's House Hospice.
