YORK-based train giant GNER has scooped two national safety awards.
The company, Britain's fastest train operator, has won a gold award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and has achieved level-seven status in the Railway Operator Audit Rating System.
Chiefs at the company say the two awards underline GNER's "leading role in improving safety culture".
GNER'S gold award recognises the firm's high levels of safety management and improving accident or injury performance at work.
Its level-seven rating, which followed a rigorous two-week safety audit, is higher than most other transport companies in the world.
The rating provides the benchmark for looking at train company safety procedures and GNER has risen from level three in only seven years. It is the first UK train operator to achieve a level-seven rating.
Jonathan Metcalfe, GNER's chief operating officer, said: "These awards are testimony to a lot of hard work and our continued determination to place safety at the heart of what we do."
GNER's success has stemmed from new safety literature for passengers being displayed on trains and the fitting of the automatic Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS) ahead of national deadlines.
