A SPECTACULAR entertainment set in the grounds of a stunning North Yorkshire stately home is in store at the 2003 Castle Howard Proms.

Held over two August nights, last year's shows were hailed a major success and packed in thousands of people.

But this year organisers have promised that the Evening Press-sponsored event will be better than ever, boasting new features and old favourites.

Producer Andrew Wyke said: "We produce concerts at around 20 venues throughout the summer, but there is no doubt that Castle Howard is one of the most spectacular settings we have the privilege to work at. The people in this area have really embraced these concerts and we are looking forward to this year's event.

"All I can say is that if you're planning to do anything else over that weekend then you must be crazy."

Sunday, August 16, will see Castle Howard stage the Last Night Of The Proms concert, which last year attracted 12,000 people.

On the bill is the English National Orchestra, conducted by the ever-popular Jae Alexander, star tenor Wynne Evans and soprano Sarah Ryan.

But before the main concert even starts the audience will be treated to a one-hour show by the John Miller Orchestra, the only big band in the world with a direct link to the legendary Glenn Miller.

In a further treat, show-goers will enjoy an aerial display by a Second World War Spitfire aircraft, piloted by Charlie Brown.

On Sunday, August 17, Castle Howard stages The World's Greatest Musicals In Concert, when six West End stars perform classic songs from much-loved musicals.

The show will be a real musical megamix, but expect to hear songs from Chicago, Evita, Phantom Of The Opera, and many more.

The whole event will be brought to a climax with a thrilling fireworks finale.

Mr Wyke said: "Musical theatre has given us some of the greatest songs ever written, and this show features some of the UK's finest artists singing an amazing array of magical songs."

Tickets for the shows are on sale now, costing £19 if bought before the end of June. The ticket hotline number is 0845 2256020.
