TV HISTORIAN Michael Wood visited the Minster Library today to congratulate campaigners on saving the historic collection.
He described the library as a "national treasure" and said it needed to be better publicised as a resource for the general public.
He said: "It is a wonderful library, very user-friendly. York's history is its great glory. That is what brings hundreds of thousands of people to York every year."
He said it was very important the library remained intact.
