ROAD safety outside an East Yorkshire school will come under the spotlight at a public meeting tonight.
Residents are campaigning to reduce the 40mph speed limit outside St Martin's CofE Primary School, at Fangfoss. They believe the 40 mph limit right outside the pupils' entrance is dangerous and could lead to accidents.
Parents have been lobbying East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Humberside Police about the matter, but so far no action to lower the speed limit has been taken.
Senior councillors, council employees, police officers and local MP Greg Knight have been invited to debate the issue at a public meeting tonight at 7.30. The meeting, organised by Fang-FUSS (Fangfoss Upgrades School Safety), a large group of parents and residents, will include the presentation of a large petition to the council. The meeting will be chaired by the Vicar of Fangfoss, Canon Val Hewetson.
Fang-FUSS spokesman Richard Claxton said: "Our campaign is based on a very simple, yet very compelling, set of statistics from RoSPA."
These showed that nine out of ten pedestrians are killed if they are hit by a car at 40 mph, whereas nine will survive if they are hit by a car travelling at 20 mph. He said: "It is therefore completely illogical and unacceptable to have a 40mph speed limit outside a school."
