WOULD-BE radio stars at an East Yorkshire primary school got a taste of fame when they hosted their own radio station.
Pupils at Wilberfoss Primary School, Wilberfoss, broadcast a day-long radio programme on Friday. Their station Foss FM, on 87.9FM, could be heard by anyone within a five-mile radius of the school, including residents of Pocklington and Dunnington.
The children have been working towards the radio broadcast since November. They named the station, designed its logo and pre-recorded a series of features that were aired on Friday.
They raised £2,500 in sponsorship to get the station up and running and performed some programmes live.
School governor Amanda Bell, who is project director of The Radio Business, initiated the project after learning about the Radio Academy's Radio in Schools project.
She said: "Having attended a Radio Academy evening entitled Children in Radio, I set about planning and preparing what I thought would not only be an incredibly exciting, but also extremely educationally-beneficial project for the school."
The project saw the pupils learning new technologies, including recording and editing using mini-disc recorders. They also improved their literacy and IT skills by writing letters seeking sponsorship, producing CVs to apply for jobs within the station and managing their own marketing campaign.
