PEOPLE who have made donations to York Minster Fund were reassured today that all money goes towards the conservation and restoration of the cathedral fabric.
Fund chairman David Sutcliffe spoke out in the wake of claims by former Canon John Toy that there was "misguided extravagance" and overgenerous perks for staff in the 1990s as the cathedral descended into financial crisis.
Mr Sutcliffe was concerned that people might believe money they had donated for the upkeep of the cathedral had been diverted.
"The fund is an independent secular charitable trust concerned solely with the continuous task of conserving, preserving and restoring the fabric of York Minster," he said.
"All donations to the fund are used specifically for this purpose. Grants to the Dean and Chapter are towards specific projects, previously agreed by the trustees.
"Donations are not made towards day-to-day running expenses of the Dean and Chapter."
