BREAM provided all the leading weights in Sunday's 54-entry York open angling match on the Ouse between Redhouse and Poppleton.

Phil Austin (Armley Angling) led from the peg above the rough field at Redhouse. Fishing mid-river with a ground bait and caster feeder and baiting with worm he took four bream in the opening hour of the contest.

He added three skimmers and a few roach before a hectic closing few minutes saw him net another five slabs to boost his haul to a winning 44lb 4oz.

Wayne Shillito (Selby), from a peg above the barbel hole at Redhouse, used the same tactics as the winner and had four bream in two pairs at 10am and 3pm for 20lb 9oz. Mark Walton (York) had four bream from above the barge at Redhouse on worm for his 18lb 3oz

York Juniors struggled on Friday evening when the bream refused to play along the New Walk. The 24 anglers had to make do with perch and eels, A Wilson needing only 12oz to win the match and the senior prize.

Runner-up was C Taylor with 8oz ahead of junior winner J Collier ,who had 7oz.

Others: C Kaye 6oz 8dm; P Harris 6oz; T Bamber and R Whitwell both 5oz; D Island 4oz; J Pinder and S Martin both 3oz; T Broxup and L McGill both 2oz.

Mitre Angling, York Tackle, Acomb Tackle and Stan Burdett all supported the match.

Pegs on Goldrush dominated the 42-strong Saturday Open match at the Willows.

Dave Cheatham (Castleford) won from peg 39. Alternating meat and pellet he targeted the overhanging trees on the island at 11 metres for his 48lb 8oz of carp to 4lb.

Dennis Geldard (Boston Spa) used the same bait combination from peg 58 for a mixed bag of tench, ide and carp totalling 45lb 6oz.

Dave Wright (Harrogate) wo Tuesday evening's 30-peg match with 61lb. From peg 33 he took carp to 4lb on cat meat at 3 metres. Bob Rymer (Brighouse) used pellet and meat at 7 metres for 41lb 8oz of carp, ide and tench.

Dave Topham won both last week's contests at Oaktree, Huby. In the mid-week match on Pond One he had a 66lb 12oz net of carp and bream. Dave Lamb 60lb 8oz and Adam Jaffier 53lb 8oz were best of the rest. On Sunday, Topham won the 30-entry match on Pond One with 38lb 4oz. Andy Middleton was second with 33lb 12oz to edge out Dave Lamb, who returned a level 32lb.
