A YORK businessman and former captain of York Golf Club has died aged 86.
Denys Leslie Terrey Creer, was born in York, and brought up in a house on The Mount.
His father, Leslie Creer, was Sheriff of York and set up a firm of chartered accountants, now known as Creers.
Mr Creer was educated at Uppingham and Cambridge, before serving as a Captain in the Royal Artillery during the Second World War, in Egypt. It was there he met and married Mouzaffer, who was of a Turkish family living in Alexandria.
After the war, they returned to York and settled in Naburn, where they lived for almost 50 years, taking an active part in community life.
Mr Creer qualified as a chartered accountant and joined the family firm, where he spent most of his working life.
He became involved with the Merchant Adventurers and York Civic Trust, and became clerk to the governors of St Peter's School and chairman of the governors of Terrington Hall Preparatory School. A keen sportsman, Mr Creer was captain of York Golf Club, where he was a member for over 50 years.
He was an active charity worker, helping the Wilberforce Home, among others.
Mr Creer was predeceased by his wife in 1996.
He leaves sons Leslie and Ian, daughter Yasmina, and grandsons Ashley, Iain and Stuart.
A service of thanksgiving for his life will be held at the Merchant Adventurers Hall on July 10 at 2.30pm.
