STAFF and trustees at Martin House Hospice for children and young people are celebrating the first birthday of its special teenage unit.

The hospice, at Boston Spa, near Wetherby, opened the dedicated unit last year following an 18-month fundraising appeal.

The six-bed unit gives young people at the hospice the opportunity to share an increased level of independence in a home-from-home environment.

The first young people were welcomed to the Lodge for respite care on June 25, 2002.

A spokeswoman for Martin House thanked everyone who took part in the A Place For Us Appeal.

She said: "The success of the campaign, which was achieved in record time and raised over £2,014,732, was due to the generosity and unstinting support we received from people throughout the Yorkshire community."

Martin House has nine children's bedrooms plus the six additional bedrooms which the teenage unit offers to care for children and young people with life limiting illness and their families.
