YORK'S new-look police support officers were publicly revealed for the first time today as they prepared to combat low-level crime and nuisance behaviour on the city's streets.
From secretaries to sales co-ordinators, the 30 freshly-recruited community support officers are relishing their new role.
"We think we will get a warm welcome, particularly among people who have fear of crime, like the elderly," said former company secretary Lesley Perkins.
"We see ourselves as bridging the gap between the community and the police, and while we are in uniform we are really working for the community most of all," said colleague Kathryn Wright.
Chief Superintendent John Lacy said: "We are delighted to have these new officers on the streets, where they will be the new face of North Yorkshire Police for the community and can tackle those things that make a difference to life."
