A CAR which overturned after a head-on smash at a York roundabout could have been racing other vehicles, police said.
A white Renault Clio collided with a silver Mercedes at the Haxby roundabout on the A1237 outer ring road at 6.30pm yesterday. PC Jack Russell, of York Police, said it was believed the Clio was travelling towards the roundabout at speed, from Strensall towards Wigginton.
The driver then lost control and left the roundabout on the opposite side of the road, where he collided head-on with the Mercedes, which was approaching the roundabout from the opposite direction. The Clio then overturned.
PC Russell said: "Suggestions have been made that the Clio had been racing other vehicles which had not stopped at the scene. Police are very anxious to speak to anybody who was in the area at that time, or who saw the Clio prior to the accident."
Anybody with information should contact Traffic Sergeant Ian Butler on 01904 631321.
