THE Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is having an open day at Askham Bog Nature Reserve, near York, tomorrow.
Anyone interested in nature, conservation, birds, plants, and so on, is welcome to go along, meet trust staff and volunteers, and find out more about the reserve.
Regular work is essential to preserve this rare habitat - some is done by trust staff and volunteers, some by a team of Exmoor ponies. They will be on the reserve of visitors to see on Saturday - along with their new-born foals.
Askham Bog, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's oldest nature reserve, is a rare example of ancient fen. Rain water filtering through debris left by glaciers in the last Ice Age keeps the ground alkaline - this means that many plants not found elsewhere can grow there.
Askham Bog is near Copmanthorpe, alongside the A1036. From the A64, the car park is just at the first set of lights. From York, take the A1036 towards Copmanthorpe and park in the car park at the lights just after the railway line. Anyone wanting to go can phone the trust on 01904 659570 for information.
Guided walks will take place at 2pm and 3pm.
