A ROMAN Catholic Priest who originated from York has died, aged 61.
Father Ian Stewart, studied for the priesthood at Ushaw College, Durham, and was ordained at St Joseph's, York, in July 1977.
He began his ministry as assistant priest at St Thomas More, Middlesbrough, and served there until 1981 when he became Chaplain to the Apostleship of the Sea, Hull.
In 1989, he became assistant priest at St Gabriel's, Ormesby, and in 1991 he became parish priest at St Anne's, Eston. He was later appointed diocesan director of education.
In 1995, Father Ian was appointed parish priest in Yarm.
Father Ian was a private, but pleasant and understanding man. He gave a lot of time to the care of the sick, and displayed an organisational talent during his time as director of education. It was often remarked that Father Ian "got jobs done".
Father Ian's hobbies included building model planes and railways.
The funeral mass was being celebrated at noon today at the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Middles-brough.
