A HOUSE given over to the students at York College to help them learn basic skills has been officially opened.
Students taking part in essential skills courses will be able to learn DIY, cooking and horticulture at the detached house in Tadcaster Road, York.
Students raised money to furnish the building which has been named The Gatehouse.
The project was supported by Budgens, which donated £300 and Stone Plan, from Dalton Terrace, which gave a water feature.
Tutor Bridget Lowery said: "The Gatehouse is enriching part of the curriculum by teaching independent living skills in a real home setting.
"The students are being taught citizenship, community, DIY, soft furnishing, cooking, horticulture, good grooming, leisure activities and self advocacy. "The students have enjoyed making the house a home and will continue to benefit from their experiences here".
The house was opened by Budgens store manager Paul Smart and the Lord Mayor of York, Coun Chas Hall.
