THOUSANDS of schoolchildren enjoyed a taste of the country life, courtesy of the organisers of the Great Yorkshire Show.
Youngsters from York, Northallerton and Harrogate joined hundreds more from across the region at the Yorkshire Agricultural Society's annual Countryside Days at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate.
Held for the first time in 2001, the event has become so popular that for the first time this year two days were set aside, with more than 2,500 schoolchildren taking part.
At the showground, they enjoyed a range of "hands-on" activities from weaving to dry stone walling and wood turning.
Highlights also included working sheep dog displays, bee-keeping, owls and hawks shows, and arable farming and forestry exhibitions.
Representatives from the East Yorkshire Ferret Rescue Centre and the British Horse Racing Training Board also provided displays.
Children attending the event were asked to design and make a farm animal or bird out of waste material.
The winning school is to be presented with a wooden bench at this year's Great Yorkshire Show from Tuesday, July 8, to Thursday, July 10.
