MORE people in Malton are now forsaking out-of-town developments in York and Scarborough to shop locally - thanks to a successful campaign.
A report by the town centre management shows that major steps have been taken to stem the drift of shoppers to supermarkets outside Malton and Norton.
Key to the turnaround is said to be town centre manager Pete Mudge, highlighted as a "guiding light" in improving the image of the two towns.
Successful ideas such as floral displays, Christmas lights and moves to brighten up shop fronts all helped to contribute to the increase in shopper numbers.
Mr Mudge said: "We have tried a few ideas to bring people in and it appears to be working, but we are always trying to attract more.
"All of this has seen the community work together. It has been down to hard work from every sector."
