York cyclists were well represented in the Ferryhill Wheelers' road race in County Durham over a lumpy 50-mile course in searing heat.
With a field of 76 riders, problems arose with riders crossing the central white line. The race was stopped on the second lap and riders were given a dressing down by race officials, who re-started the race after five minutes' delay.
Wigginton's Phil Brighton (Askham Bryan College/Ceejay
Graphics) was York's top finisher in seventh place despite being badly blocked with only 150 metres to go in the uphill finish. Said Brighton: "With 200 metres to go I was well outside the first 20 riders and thought
there was nowhere to go but managed to find a way through, although I am sure if I could have had a clear finish I feel I would have had the legs to
win."
Matt Lunn (Racescene) came in a very good ninth place closely
followed by Mike Eastwood (VC York) and Rob Osman (Clifton CC ).
Haxby's Mark Wolstenholme, meanwhile, slashed 11 minutes of his personal best for sixth spot in the Burton and District 100-mile time-trial.
Wolstenholme finished in 3hr 40min 12sec to claim his top ten finish in a field of 120 riders.
His team, Pete Read Racing, took the team prize with Joel Wainman finishing in 3-38-20 and Steve Smales 3-54-18.
The time trial, raced on the A50 near Derby, was won by south coast-based Rowan Horner (VC St Raphael) in 3-32-44.
