VANDALS have destroyed all but two of the lights on York's Millennium Bridge.
The louts were today described as "mindless idiots" who took no pride in the city.
During the night, up to 30 lights - circular ones embedded into the walkway and rectangular lights underneath the seating on the bridge - were smashed. It will take several days to replace them.
The cost of the damage was estimated at between £1,000 and £2,000.
Peter Evely, the council's head of network management, said his officers had discovered an "horrendous situation" and CCTV footage was now being examined to try to identify the culprits.
Mr Evely said: "Overnight, every one except two of our lights have been smashed.
"I find it very disappointing that we have mindless idiots in this city that can't take pride in the things that the city has pride in itself.
"Why they decide that anything that's good has to be destroyed I have no idea."
He said the incident would not cause safety problems to people using the river, but it created a dark area for people walking over the bridge."
