AN EAST YORKSHIRE school has paid tribute to a former headmaster and keen sportsman who has died aged 85.
Guy Willatt was head teacher at Pocklington School for 14 years, from 1966 until 1980.
After teaching at the Edinburgh Academy, and at Repton, and becoming headmaster of Heversham Grammar School, Westmorland, he gained the Pocklington post, where his leadership was described as firm, but fair.
Mr Willatt was an eminent amateur cricketer in the 1940s and 1950s. He captained Cambridge University after the war, and after a brief spell with Nottinghamshire, captained Derbyshire from 1951 until 1955.
He brought his keen sports interest to Pocklington School, where the cricket and rugby teams prospered. The First Eleven cricket team played against a wide range of schools in the North and Midlands. Mr Willatt was a member of the Pocklington Pixies' team, which reached the first Cricketer National Cup Final at Edgbaston in 1969.
David Nuttall, deputy headmaster under Mr Willatt, said: "Guy Willatt was a headmaster of great wisdom who guided Pocklington School through the social turbulence of the late sixties and seventies."
