FORMER Cabinet Minister Frank Dobson has praised University of York students for their contribution to the local community through help they are giving in the city's schools.
The York-born ex-Health Secretary was speaking at a presentations ceremony for York Students in Schools scheme, held at Heslington Church.
He said more than 400 students took part in the scheme, under which they visited local schools in their free time to act as tutors and mentors for pupils.
"Some academic institutions make little or no contribution to the place where they are located," he said.
"Others may have connections with local businesses or contribute to research in their area. But that doesn't usually involve the students very much.
"In many places, the main positive contribution that students make is to push up the takings for pubs, clubs and taxis. But that is not true here in York."
He said the scheme was popular with pupils, teachers and parents, and gave a well-earned sense of satisfaction to the students involved. "It has been so successful that this year it has received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Award."
