FORMER York pub landlord Ron Birdsall and his wife Phoebe celebrated diamond memories of their married life this week.
The pair, whose Diamond Wedding was on June 5, returned to the Station Hotel, Tollerton, which they ran together for 30 years, to remember the days when customers queued outside the pub to sample Phoebe's "novelty" food.
Phoebe was the first landlady in the area to sell chicken and chips in a basket for the princely sum of two shillings and sixpence.
The couple spent ten years without electricity there, using oil lamps for light.
Ron, 80, and Phoebe, 79, have lived in Haxby for the last five years.
Phoebe said: "I'm married to a comedian, we've had a busy life but we've always been happy. I've enjoyed every minute of it."
As part of their anniversary celebrations they spent a weekend in Blackpool, where they originally honeymooned in 1943.
The couple have a son Derick, daughter Patricia, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
