A NORTH Yorkshire company has raised more than £100,000 to help blind people in the Third World.
The Lord Mayor of York, Coun Chas Hall, was today accepting a cheque for £111,000 from Tomlinson's Furniture Group, Tockwith, near York, on behalf of the charity Sight Savers. The organisation works to cure eye disease and improve the life of those with blindness in the Third World.
Sight Savers ABC scheme in Kenya will form the second part of the Lord
Mayor's Charity Appeal.
"Sight Savers is a charity that not only works to prevent blindness, but
also helps those who have already lost their sight in the Third World," Coun Hall said. "The Lord Mayor's Charity will specifically support the ABC scheme, which provides Braille books for blind primary-aged children to enable them to be educated in mainstream schools alongside sighted schools." Tomlinsons has pledged to donate more than £300,000 to fund projects in the Kericho Bomet region of Kenya run by Sight Savers International.
The first part of the Lord Mayor's Charity was launched at Woodlands Respite Care Centre, York, last week, and aims to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society (York and District Branch) - a national charity that funds research, welfare, MS specialist nurses, in addition to supporting those with MS.
