IT WAS up, up and away for York Scouts who raised money by racing balloons.

Heslington Scout Group held a balloon race to raise cash for a new marquee. Their present one, which has seen better days, is used by the Scouts for various activities and also to sell food on bonfire night to raise money for Heslington Church.

More than 400 balloons were sold and released just before the group's AGM. The race raised more £500 to put towards the new marquee.

The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts plan to plot the course of the balloons as reports roll in and put the information on a notice board at their hut in Heslington.

The person whose balloon travels the farthest will win a luxury limousine and driver for a day. The balloons were released by the children who sold the most balloons. They were Matthew Wyatt-Chenery, Adam Swinton, Alasdair Taylor and Alex Pinnington.
