CITY of York Council's early years and childcare department, together with other local children's organisations, is holding several events through June and July to help families.

The events are part of the National Sure Start Month, an initiative to give parents information about the range of support services available to them.

Carolyn Clarke, the council's recruitment officer for early years, said: "People need to be able to access affordable quality childcare and find out about all the available options concerning their children.

"Throughout the month there will be events giving a wide range of help and information to parents and carers. People who are thinking about returning to work and those who may want to consider a career in childcare should also come along."

The Children's Information Service will be taking a play bus to Clifton Moor shopping centre on Saturday, June 21. Parents can talk to council advisors while the children play with toys on the bus.

Experts from Job Centre Plus and an Inland Revenue tax credit adviser will also be on hand, along with other organisations, such as the Out Of School Club Network and the National Childminding Association.

On July 1, in conjunction with York College Achievers Awards, there will be a Celebration Of Childminding awards evening at the college, in Tadcaster Road.

Parents are also being invited to nominate a registered childminder who has made a real difference to their family.

Nomination forms are available from childminders or the council's Children's Information Service on York (01904) 554628.
